CULTURE AND HERITAGE

The quality and diversity of Gironde’s heritage sites make the region a paradise for lovers of fine old stone, and indeed for anyone interested in our heritage in general. There are over 900 edifices protected under French legislation on Historical Monuments, and 250 sites listed under the département ancient monument label “Gironde à fleur de Pierre”.

This “culture and heritage” booklet presents a selection of such sites. Visitors can focus on specific historical themes that interest them, or on the towns and landscapes of Gironde as a whole. The following pages are an invitation to understand the history of the men and women who formed and handed down a truly remarkable heritage that is still in the making.

THE IRISH HERITAGE

Bordeaux and Gironde, like other places in France, welcomed Irish people, who went on to form quite a considerable colony. Considerable historical research has been undertaken to understand the lives of these Irish prople who settled in Gironde. The traders and seafarers of the time are well known now, as are the clergyman who, having renounced missionary work in their far away and dangerous homeland, often stayed in Gironde.

In this document, we offer you the chance to walk in the footsteps of these Irishmen of yesterday and of today in Gironde. A journey around Bordeaux, and then further afield into the vineyards and countryside of Gironde, will bring you into closer contact with the lives of these migrants from the Emerald Isle, who chose to live and participate in the splendour of Bordeaux and the Department of Gironde.
